Some books hand you a hero. Onyx Redemption hands you Tony Agyei, then quietly asks, “Are you sure you know what a hero looks like?” That’s what pulled me in and that's saying a lot for a person that rarely read books nowadays.

Tony G. Hammond’s Onyx Redemption is a story about a Ghanaian-American man carrying more weight than any one person should. Power. Guilt. Family expectations. Tony's journey isn’t clean or cute yet it does build strength and even impact your own life

And that’s where the book shines and really love the concept behind it.

Tony is complicated in a deeply spiritual way

Tony Agyei is the kind of person who makes you want to shake him and sit beside him at the same time. He's a very complex person handling complex problems and is very guarded due to that. One, he is carrying the weight of his SEAL team being ambushed and he's the only one that made it out. Since then life was never the same. He also carries the lineage of a Ghanaian father and a Afrikan American mother who he respects and also balances both cultures.

After military life, Tony retreats to Ghana and builds a heavily secured fortress. He eventually enters the international weapons trade, where his growing influence attracts the attention of the International Crime Syndicate (ICS). The ICS begins considering Tony for the position of Regional Commander for Africa, drawing him toward a much larger world of power, responsibility, and consequence.

Power in this book really makes you think

One of the richest parts of Onyx Redemption is how it treats power.

Tony's actions come from real emotional places, which makes his flaws harder to dismiss. Tony’s ambitions eventually grow beyond personal power. He begins wrestling with questions of responsibility, African unity, identity, and what his influence could mean for people far beyond himself. His growing involvement with the ICS raises questions and consequences that Tony is forced to wrestle with.

That’s where Tony G. Hammond’s character work has bite.

It also makes Tony Agyei’s journey more relatlable. He is not changing in isolation. His growth affects others, and their responses shape him in return. Redemption becomes relational. It has witnesses. It has consequences.

Some of the people along the way in his spiritual journey:

Les Townsend- his best friend from childhood, that loves to dream big

Tony's parents- who provide him with wisdom, strength, and a connection to his roots..

Chairman Gustavo Fuentes- Chairman of the International Crime Syndicate.

Makeda- An Ethiopian sister who gives Tony more spiritual vision of who he is

Council of Seven Chiefs- Council of Seven Chiefs — ancestral chiefs who remind Tony of his heritage and the destiny calling him toward leadership and redemption.

International Crime Syndicate is a global umbrella alliance bringing together some of the world’s most powerful organized-crime networks, including Central and South American cartels, the Japanese Yakuza, Chinese Triads, the Russian Bratva, and the Italian-American Mafia.

Each organization retains its own identity and leadership, but through the ICS they cooperate across borders, share intelligence, coordinate operations, and protect their collective interests. In many ways, the ICS functions as a criminal counterpart to international law-enforcement cooperation—an alliance of empires operating under one global structure. In this organization, Tony is proposed to be the Regional Commander of Africa.

And somewhere within that structure, Tony Agyei is about to become very important.

What worked greatest for me

The strongest part of Onyx Redemption is its emotional patience.

Tony G. Hammond lets the story breathe. He doesn’t rush Tony Agyei into neat resolutions. He allows discomfort to stay on the page long enough to matter. That makes the healing feel more relatable. Hammond draws on his own military experience to lend realism to Tony Agyei’s decisions and actions.

I also loved the way the novel treats Black culture as active force. I have never really read a book where African and Black culture is highly regarded that deserves protection and respect. Even the book cover featuring the Sankofa bird/symbol shows going back and retrieve and the most moving of all, the novel suggests that coming home is not always about returning to a place. Sometimes it’s about returning to the parts of yourself you abandoned to continue to live. That part really gets to me in a spiritual way.

My verdict on Onyx Redemption

Onyx Redemption is a thoughtful, emotionally grounded novel with a strong sense of culture, character, and moral struggle. Tony G. Hammond builds Tony Agyei’s journey with care, giving him enough flaws to feel real and enough longing to keep us invested. I was enjoying every page, learning more about Tony and the multiple characters that form the core strength of the novel.

I’d recommend it to readers who enjoy character-driven fiction, family drama, stories of identity, and redemption arcs that don’t cheat. If you like novels where people have to face themselves before they can face the world, this one is worth your time. Also if you are a Black person that cares about preserving and enriching our culture especially, spiritually then is powerful book is so worth it.

This is Tony G. Hammond's first novel of a planned seven-book series so I'm eager to see what's in store next because he can definitely write a page-turning book,

Tony Agyei’s journey may be painful, but it’s also deeply human. And that’s what makes Onyx Redemption linger. It doesn’t offer a shiny version of healing. It offers something greater: a hard-earned one.

“From the many, he is ONE.”
